Petillo among 22 new lax players at Rutgers

Among the 22 new players for Rutgers men’s lacrosse this season is Sachem North alum Cody Petillo.

Joining the former All-Division and All-County player in Scarlet Knight country are 10 All-Americans, who will all play for fellow Sachem alum Brian Brecht, in his second year as head coach at Rutgers.

“I’m excited to welcome our first recruiting class to Rutgers as student-athletes,” Brecht said in a statement on the Rutgers athletic website. “As a staff, assistant coaches Keith Cromwell, Craig McDonald and Noah Fossner worked very hard and put a lot of time into bringing this strong and well rounded class to ‘The Banks’.

“It has been a pleasure working with these young men this fall, as I look forward to having them mesh with our upperclassmen. They will gain experience as we grow the program.  With our upcoming fall scrimmages less than a week away, it will be nice to see them in their first college action as Scarlet Knights.”

Petillo, the son of former Sachem assistant and alum Rich Petillo and brother of alum Bryan Petillo, scored 74 goals and recorded 108 ground balls in his four-year varsity career with the Flaming Arrows. Last season he led Sachem in scoring and was a team captain.

Rutgers, who competes in the Big East, finished 6-9 last year in Brecht’s first season as a head coach with the Scarlet Knights.
