Haun, Deboer, Calvagna power Sachem to W

chris-scoreboardThis week marked the first major stretch of competition for all varsity spring sports on Long Island. All teams are playing full force through the next couple of months.

Here’s a look at scores from the last couple of days in Sachem …

Sachem North Boys Lacrosse: Sachem 18, North Babylon 8 … After a tight 7-6 overtime victory two days ago, Sachem rallied for an 18-8 win over North Babylon on Wednesday. Freshman Tom Haun scored four goals, while Shane Deboer scored two goals and added five assists. Stony Brook-bound Mike Calvagna, one of Long Island’s top face-off men, was 13-for-16 from the circle. Sachen (2-0) remarkably was able to use five goalies in net during the victory.

Sachem East Boys Lacrosse: Hills East 9, Sachem 6 … Earlier this week, Sachem East dropped its first Division I contest of the season, 9-6, against Hills East. Jason Debenedictis scored three goals for the Arrows.

Sachem East Girls Lacrosse: Sachem 13, Riverhead 5 … Casey Gelderman scored four goals and added two assists, while Jenna Kelleher scored three goals and had an assist. Kaitlyn Shanahan also had three goals. Sachem East is 2-0 to start the season.

Sachem North Girls Lacrosse: Northport 18, Sachem 5 … Jessica Mazliah scored three goals for Sachem in the loss.

Sachem North Softball: Sachem 17, Central Islip 0 … On Wednesday, Sachem trounced Central Islip, 17-0, for its League II season opener. Chelsea Palma hit two home runs and Kristen Bello went 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and four runs. Rebecca Amadeo pitched five scoreless innings for the shutout victory.
