Sachem North girls track continued its winning ways with a victory over the Northport Tigers by a score of 93-57 Wednesday.

Sachem dominated early events as it won five of the first six events.  Sachem continued its dominance in field and specialty events with wins in shotput, high jump, long and triple jump, 100 m. high hurdles and racewalk.

Sachem horizontal jumping duo of Sunja Joseph and Leah Blackall put on an impressive show at long and triple jump.  Northport’s Lauren Glancy, along with Sunja and Leah is one of the few Suffolk County jumpers to hit 17 feet in long jump and 35 feet in triple jump to date this spring.  Lauren’s long jump mark of 16’ 8” (third place) and triple jump mark of 35’ 7.75” (second place) fell short of Sachem-led winning marks today.  Sunja won triple jump with a season-best mark of 36’ 1.75”.  Leah placed third with a 35’ 1.75” jump.  Leah won long jump with a season-best 17’ 2.25” jump.  Sunja took second with a 17’ 0” leap.

Alyssa Leto was Sachem’s lone two-event winner today. Alyssa won the meter dash in 26.0.  Alyssa winning time of 61.4 in the 400 meter dash is one of the better times in Suffolk County (currently tied for #11).  That she did not start her race when the gun went off made her race win more impressive.  Alyssa’s raised her hand and called to the starter for a re-set following a long hold while the official was giving race start commands.

The official started the race as he saw and heard Alyssa’s attempt to get his attention.  Instead of firing a call-back shot, the official let the race go on.  The official explained his actions and offered a re-race (allowed under the rules).  A re-run of the race was less than an ideal solution and was moot as Alyssa won the race and secured team points for Sachem.  Sachem will have to wait for another day to see how fast Alyssa can run when she gets to start a 400 when the starter’s pistol is fired.

Eight-hundred meter runner Samantha Giambrone scored her first dual meet point for Sachem with her third place finish in the two-lapper today.  Samantha, along with teammate Monica Abrams, stayed in contact with Northport’s lead pack throughout the race.  Samantha, following a race plan, pushed out of the last turn and unleashed a powerful kick to place third in a season-best time of 2:32.5.  Monica, showing a strong kick of her own, finished .1 seconds behind Samantha.

Sachem distance runners broke up Northport’s talented and deep distance squad in the 1500 as Elise Ramirez placed third in a team leading 5:12.8 and in the 3000 with Mackenzie Coleman running a team-leading 11:07.6 and placing second in the race.

The North Flaming Arrows finished the first three weeks of its dual meet season with wins against three of the top teams in Suffolk County with its season-opener home meet win against Connetquot and road trip victories against Sachem East and Northport.  Sachem returns home on Saturday to host the Suffolk Coaches Invitational – the first major invitational of the spring season.  Most Suffolk teams and several Nassau County teams will be at the meet.  The meet starts at 9:30 a.m.  Come to Sachem North and see some of Long Island’s top track and field talent compete.
