The wrestling community was excited by the recently announced news that LIU Post is adding wrestling to its varsity sports starting with the 2014-2015 season.
Hall of Fame coach Joe Patrovich will coach the team.
When looking for recruits Patrovich contacted former Sachem East wrestlers Jackson Mordente, Frank Merante and Chris Di Iorio.
Mordente, a 2013 All-State finisher and Section XI runner-up, committed almost immediately and will take his wrestling skills to Brookville.
Section XI runner-up Frank Merante completed his junior college wrestling career for Nassau last year and is finalizing plans to finish his career at Post.
Section XI Champion and All-State finisher Chris DiIorio is also exploring returning to the mat for the Pioneers. He just finished a very successful four-year football career with LIU Post, but he has one remaining year of athletic eligibility. It looks like he will put that year to use by competing at 197 pounds for LIU Post’s first wrestling team since the mid 1980’s.
