Recent Sachem alum Katie Trombetta is a finalist for the inaugural Marcus A. Henry Award presented by Newsday. The award will be given to a student-athlete, “who not only excels on the field and the classroom, but displays great leadership.”

This year’s winner will be announced Thursday on Newsday.com/Sports and a profile of the recipient will appear in Sunday’s paper.

Trombetta, who will play field hockey at Michigan, graduates as one of the top athletes in the history of the Sachem Central School District. She was a three-time All-American and led Sachem East to two state championships, and three Long Island and Suffolk County titles.

While also maintaining a high grade point average and excelling on the field, Trombetta was involved with the Wounded Warrior Project, and helped lead the annual food drive at Sachem East, which fed thousands of community residents.

Henry was a high school sports writer for Newsday who died recently.
