Sachem North’s Elijah Gomez has committed to play lacrosse at Mercy College.

“When I went on a visit to Mercy College I got this feeling that I belong there,” he said. “I envisioned myself playing lacrosse at Mercy all while receiving a great education.”

Gomez, who will play close defense and long stick midfield in college, was also considering Pace University, Florida Southern, and Dominican College.

He joins Sachem teammate Joe Simone, who has also committed to play at the Division II school. They will room together.

“Elijah is another multi-sport athlete who has worked very hard,” said Sachem North lacrosse coach Jay Mauro. “Elijah brings a toughness to our defense. He has worked extremely hard to compete for our team and beyond. We are very excited and happy for him.”

He plans on majoring in health science and has aspirations of being a nurse practitioner.

“I take my education seriously,” said Gomez, who also plays football. “I am a student first and an athlete second.  Coach always tells us to keep up with our studies and to do our homework.  He keeps on top of us about our school work and how important it is to be done and kept in good standings.”

While it’s still football season for Gomez, he is looking forward to the spring.

“I have always been told to set my goals high,” he said, “so this year I have set them even higher.  I intend on keeping up my grades.  On the field I intend on giving my all and to work together with my teammates as one.  I will never give up and I will strive for success.”
