Screen shot 2014-09-28 at 11.07.39 PMSachem alum Terry Mangan is back in the college lacrosse coaching ranks. After a brief stint in the private sector working with Trilogy Lacrosse in New York City, Mangan was recently named as the assistant men’s lacrosse coach at St. John’s University.

Mangan was previously the head men’s coach at Lafayette University, and an assistant at the University of Massachusetts, Hobart College, University of Pennsylvania, University of Maryland-Baltimore County and Washington College (Md.).

“I’m really excited that Terry Mangan decided to return to college coaching, and thrilled that he’s chosen St. John’s as the place to do it,” St. John’s head coach Jason Miller said in a statement. “I believe Terry has the ability to impact every aspect of our program; what we do on the field and what we do off of it. He already has a great relationship with assistant Dan Paccione from their time together at UMass, and I welcome his experience and input with the difficult decisions that coaches often have to make. I couldn’t be more excited about what he brings to our program.”

Mangan is one of a number of Sachem alums coaching at the collegiate level, including Brian Brecht (Rutgers), Joe Amplo (Marquette), Jason Fautas (Walsh), among others.

The Terry Mangan File:

  • Guided Lafayette to its only Patriot League Tournament berth in program history in 2010, and was rewarded that same season by being named Patriot League Coach of the Year
  • Led Lafayette to its first wins over nationally-ranked opponents, defeating Navy and Bucknell, and, in 2010, saw his Leopards rank sixth in the country in scoring offense and fifth in assists per game
  • Mentored 55 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections over his last two seasons with the Leopards, the highest total in the league over that span
  • With Mangan on staff, UMass finished first in the nation in scoring offense in 2002 and second in scoring in 2001
  • Helped guide Hobart to two NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2000 Patriot League championship while coaching a pair of All-Americans and seeing three of his defensemen collected All-Patriot League honors in 2000
  • Graduate of Roanoke College, Mangan was a four-year varsity letterwinner at the goalkeeper position and helped guide his team to four NCAA Tournament appearances
