What started as a district wide leadership initiative in Sachem has now spread to community organizations. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People are contagious in a good way.

A fifth grade Cub Scout den out of Lynwood Elementary School has adopted the principles of The 7 Habits and are calling them the “The 7 Habits of Cub Scouting”.

The Arrow of Light Den, comprised of mainly fifth graders, as part of one of their “Scholar Pin” requirements created “The 7 Habits of Cub Scouts”.

Part of the pin requirement was collecting or being part of a community service project, so they choose to jump on board with the PTA and make a push to collect more box tops.

The boys had fun thinking of the ways they use the 7 habits outside of school…This was an awesome experience and I plan to have them share this with the entire Pack.

What we do depends on how we see the world around us. Therefore, if you want to change your habits, begin by changing your paradigms.

“I can”…I’m sorry”…“I Choose to”…“Let’s look at all our options”…“I will get this done”…

“There must be something we can do”…

The 7 Habits of Cub Scouting

Habit 1 – Be Proactive: “I take charge by taking over projects when needed and take charge of activities while camping”. Cub Scouts should be proactive when camping by taking charge of setting up your own tent”. “When I get home I know what I want to accomplish”. “Don’t wait to act, act quickly and get a first aid kit or get help if someone gets hurt”.

Habit 2 – Begin with the End in Mind: “I have a plan to get my Cub Scout homework done by Friday’s meeting”. Cub Scouts always make a schedule of your camping trip so you can have an organized trip”. “I think of the finished product when setting up my tent and then come up with my steps to build it”. “I set a goal to work on pins and achievements”. “

Habit 3 – Put First Things First: “When we go camping, I put the tent up before anything else so we have somewhere to sleep”. “I collect kindle, tinder and large burnable wood so we can have a fire at night before I go on a hike or have fun”. “I set up my campsite and then I run and play”. “I do the important things first”

Habit 4 – Think Win Win: “I compromise with other scouts to make sure everyone if happy”. Cub Scouts let everyone join” “ Take turns with a partner for cooking breakfast on camping trips” “ If my friend wants to cook and I do too, we come up with an idea together to each cook”.

Habit 5 – Seek First to Understand then to be Understood: “I listen to my friends ideas and then I listen to mine” “You should always listen to your Den Leader when he or she says something” “If any adult tells me to not go somewhere or not to climb a tree, I listen” “I listen to other scouts first and then I talk”

Habit 6 – Synergize: “I work with other scouts to finish big projects together, such as our pins” “When your Den has lots of ideas you should compromise” “I synergize with my Den to collect wood and materials to build a fire” “I synergize with other scouts to work together on community service”

Habit 7 – Sharpen the Saw: “I play a game with friends after we work hard” “When I go hiking I like to look for animals” “I eat a salad and have some fun outside while exercising” “I sit down and play world of tanks”
