Merrimac Elementary School recently took part in the ALS “Ride for Life” event

Patients who struggle with ALS travel a great distance in motorized wheelchairs in an effort to raise awareness and generate funding with an ultimate goal of finding a cure and “Striking Out” ALS.

The group traveled past Merrimac Elementary School on May 29, and they were greeted by the entire student and staff population, cheering and holding up handmade signs with supportive messages on them.

“It was an emotional and touching experience for all,” said Veronica DeCicco, Principal of Merrimac. “This event is one close to the hearts of the Merrimac family, as it comes just after having an awareness assembly that truly touched the hearts of all who were there.”

Leah Pulitano, a second grader from Mrs. D’Souza’s class and member of the Student Lighthouse Team at Merrimac suggested and helped facilitate the ALS fundraiser, which is currently taking place.

Her hopes are to Strike Out ALS –one dime at a time. We are proud of her efforts and our students’ and staff’s assistance in this Service Learning Project.
