Merrimac students organize clothing drive

Gino Capuano, Sean Peek and Brandon Genovese, along with fourth grade student Tyler Koehn developed a service learning project in which families could do some spring cleaning by donating gently used clothing, shoes, blankets and towels to help those in need.

Capuano is a member of the Student Lighthouse Team and shared his idea with the group. He grabbed some classmates and created announcements.

The Lighthouse Team members created posters and spread the world to their classes.

“We collected the bags in the lobby and quickly needed to find a larger location to store all the donations,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco.

More thanĀ 90 bags of gently used items were donated. The students also helped load the donation truck, truly leading the way with their hard work.

“We thank them for coming up with this worthwhile project and sharing it with the Merrimac community,” said DeCicco. “It is amazing what you can accomplish when you share your ideas with others. The school received a monetary donation from Fashion Republic Inc which will be used to help those students in need at Merrimac.”
