Sachem East’s Ryan Leone and Sachem North’s Rachel Heymach were both named News 12 Scholar Athletes earlier this year and last week capped their senior campaigns by being recognized as News 12’s Bob Wolff Scholarship winners.

This is an even higher honor and celebrates their academic and athletic ability as two of the top student-athletes on Long Island this year. Leone and Heymach both received $1,000 scholarships.

“I’m completely honored,” Heymach told News 12. “I’m floored I was actually selected for this award. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I’m so grateful and it will really help out when it comes to college.”

Heymach, who will attend Stanford, is a two-time Suffolk County champion diver, and was the captain of her track team at Sachem North as a pole vaulter. She also competed in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. She recently presented cancer research she did at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Leone, who was a captain in football and track at Sachem East, was senior class president this year, while finishing his high school tenure as salutatorian. He was also co-president of the Foreign Language Honor Society, secretary of the National Honor Society and publicity director for a number of other school organizations. Among his many achievements was being selected as Governor of the Boys State Conference during his senior year.
