Merrimac students refurbish birdhouse for VA

IMG_6770Students at Merrimac Elementary School recently refurbished birdhouse that will be sent to the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The project was completed under the guidance of Jenna Motroni, an art teacher and member of Lighthouse Team at Merrimac. Motroni’s dad, Robert Matthews, is a veteran who works in maintenance for the federal government at the VA hospital.

The birdhouse was originally created by another veteran and donated unfinished to the home to be put in their courtyard. Matthews spoke about the project to his daughter and she knew it would be a great opportunity for Merrimac students to be part of a meaningful service learning project.

“The students loved being a part of this and the veterans loved the addition to their residence,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco. “Win, win!”

The children involved were Brandon Genovese, Nicholas Genovese, Alexander Apicella, Cole Violi, Evan Kozak and Jake Burns.
