Event: Olympic fundraiser for Maria Michta-Coffey

The theme for this years Tom Toscano Barbecue is an “Olympic Celebration”.  Olympic in the sense that it is serving as a sendoff for 2012 Olympian Maria Michta Coffey as she begins final preparations for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June, with the hope to again represent Sachem, Long Island, and the USA on that largest of athletic stages- the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It will also be “Olympic” in the number of additional special honorees this year. Sachem Olympic Trials competitors Linda Detlefsen Nicosia and Jeanna Composti will be introduced along with Walk USA Coach Gary Westerfield, who will receiving the Tom Toscano Service Award.  Retiring Sachem Athletic Director Pete Blieberg and the entire Athletic office staff will also be recognized, as will Sachem XC and Track athletes that competed in this year’s New York State Championship Meets.

There will be FREE Burgers and Dogs grilled and live music by the band “Buoy 34″ and Friends throughout the event with raffle drawings occurring every 30 minutes. Special raffle prizes include U.S. Olympic Gear donated by Maria Michta Coffey and a 55” Samsung HDTV.

Presented by Irish Times Restaurant, Sachem Track, and the Tom Toscano Foundation, the 2016 Barbecue will take place Sunday, May 15th, from 2-5 pm in the spacious outdoor courtyard at Irish Times. It is a family event, all ages are welcome, and the event is open to anyone who wishes to celebrate the accomplishments of any or all of the honorees. There is no admission charge, but donations to support Sachem Track programs and help with Michta Coffey’s training expenses will be gratefully accepted.
