Sachem’s Lauren Harris sets national mark

East track

Sachem East junior Lauren Harris set a new National Record in the Mile Racewalk at the New Balance Outdoor National Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Greensboro, N.C.

Her time of 6:52.23 broke the 2006 mark of 7:00.87 recorded by Heather Buletti of New York. Harris now holds the National freshman class record (7:42.23), sophomore record (7:12.96), and junior record (6:52.23) in addition to the overall National High School Record.

Harris is the only high schooler to ever dip below the 7 minute barrier in the event. She will be traveling to Clovis, California this upcoming weekend for the upcoming U20 National Championships. Competing against the top collegians, Harris hopes to place in the top 4 in the 10K Racewalk to earn a spot on the U.S. National team that will be competing at the World U20 Championships in Poland this July.

Also competing for Sachem East at Nationals in North Carolina was senior Sam Delano who had a great day, placing eighth in a personal best time of 7:50.45 for the mile racewalk.

Sachem East had one other top 10 finish as the distance medley quartet of Val Romero, Kaitlyn Famiglietti, Ciara Murphy, and Alex DeCicco was the eighth fastest in the meet, their time of 12:04.19 falling just 7 seconds short of the Sachem East school record.
