Wenonah Elementary installs giving garden

garden 3This year at Wenonah the school’s Leadership Council came up with an idea to help the less fortunate called “The Wenonah Giving Garden.”

The motivation behind this project was to grow foods that will then be harvested for the less fortunate and to help sustain their fresh food supply.

Alongside Hillary Hess from Island Harvest, the students and teachers of Wenonah developed garden building plans which were then constructed by parents in the shape of rectangular cedar garden boxes filled with organic soil.

The leadership students were busy collecting, cleaning, cutting and sorting milk cartons for our seedling project. The students then carefully helped togerminate the seeds and nurtured them in their classrooms to seedling sized plants.

Once they reached the proper growth, the fifth grade students planted tomatoes, squash, peppers, eggplants, beans, corn, fresh herbs and a border of marigolds outside in the garden.

garden 4Day in and day out, the students of Wenonah, led by the fifth grade leadership council, continue to water this garden anticipating the first fruits of the season to appear.

Students and staff are excited to help the community this summer and harvest many more of these crops into the fall season. This truly was a community effort as the Wenonah student leadership team worked in tandem with the PTA who donated the supplies to make this garden a reality.
