Merrimac students launch successful campaign for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital

The students of Merrimac Elementary are no strangers to helping others, both in and out of their community. This holiday season, Merrimac’s spirit was extraordinary.  In addition to the annual toy drive which benefits children and families in need, a group of Merrimac’s third grade students had the desire to do more.  They came up with an idea to have a fundraiser to benefit the children of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

Kaylee Ostroski, along with Ava Randazzo,  Jenna Harper and Abby Richardson, met with the Student Lighthouse Team and presented their idea. The thought of children being hospitalized for the holidays, propelled the students to take action.

Together with the Lighthouse Team, the girls brainstormed ideas and discussed how to create a successful fundraiser while keeping the end in mind. They set a  goal of raising $400 for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and ways to maximize student involvement, but wound up raising $695.

The students researched the hospital and created an informational flyer that was sent home. They spoke about the fundraiser’s goals during morning announcements.

They created a jar full of mini, holiday themed toys and anyone who donated was given the opportunity to guess the amount of toys for a chance to win a Barnes & Noble gift card.

In addition, all who donated were given a seasonal cut out to write their name on as a show of support.

These cut outs adorn the hallway by the cafeteria and remind the students of the kindness and joy that they helped to provide others.

“The obvious dedication and synergy amongst the students proved successful and they exceeded their goal,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco. “The students at  Merrimac participated and the outcome was a WIN-WIN!”
