Sachem East Girls win Suffolk championship

In an inspiring show of team balance and depth, the Sachem East Girls Indoor Track Team repeated as Suffolk County Champions yesterday at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood. With 19 teams scoring in the meet, East came out on top, scoring 72 points for the win. Connetquot was 2nd (63 points), followed by Ward Melville (62), Brentwood (34), and Sachem North (32).

The Sachem East Arrows scored in 10 of the meet’s 14 events, scoring points in sprints, distance, and field events, and demonstrating team depth by posting multiple scorers in a number of those events. They scored in more events than any other team, had more contributing scorers than any other team, and are the only team to score in all three relay events.

Connetquot took the early lead in the meet, but the East squad relentlessly chipped away at that lead with the biggest jump made when National leader Lauren Harris garnered East’s only event win in the Race Walk with East also taking 3rd, 4th, and 6th in the event.

Going into the meet’s final three events, the relays, scores were practically tied, but the East Arrows had the advantage of fresh legs and was able to score in all three relays to pull away from Connetquot and pull out the win. More results can be found below.

The County Championship Title comes just two weeks after East took the League 1 Title with a 113.5 – 98.5 win over Ward Melville. Rosalie Gandarillas (Shot Put), Lindsey Dodenhoff (3000), Rachel Ruggiero (1500), and Lauren Harris (1500 Race Walk), all won League 1 Individual Titles to help East to the win back in January.
