Sachem’s top student-athletes were honored during annual award ceremonies this month.
The coveted Linda Otten and Richard Van Norr Awards were given to the top female and male athletes, respectively, at both Sachem East and Sachem North.
Here is a breakdown of the top winners:
- Thomas J. Sabatelle Scholar Athlete Award, Sachem East: Brendan Ryan and Isabella Jimenez
- Thomas J. Sabatelle Scholar Athlete Award, Sachem North: Jonathan Lauer and Erin Maryzek
- Linda Otten Outstanding Female Athlete, Sachem East: Lauren Harris
- Linda Otten Outstanding Female Athlete, Sachem North: Erin Maryzek
- Richard Van Norr Outstanding Male Athlete, Sachem East: Brendan Ryan
- Richard Van Norr Outstanding Male Athlete, Sachem North: James Avanzato
In case you’re wondering, the awards are named after some big names in Sachem history. Sabatelle is a Sachem alum and former district athletic director. Otten is a former district assistant athletic director. Van Norr was one of Sachem’s original three-sport stars and died tragically in 1958 in a car accident.
