Sachem’s Matt DiStefano Gets Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame Nod

Latest honor earned by Sachem Hall of Fame coach/athlete

If it wasn’t clear already, Matt DiStefano is a hall of famer. He is already an inductee of his high school and college halls of fame, and now he can add Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame to his growing resume.

The Sachem alum, teacher and coach will be inducted to the Suffolk Sports Hall in the Class of 2020 for his volleyball successes and for the work he has done with the Dezy Strong Foundation over the last year during his fight with kidney cancer.

“It’s a true honor to be inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame with such prestigious individuals,” said DiStefano. “I am beyond grateful for this opportunity on my induction. The Dezy Strong Foundation was created to help others battling this disease. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. We understand that every day is a gift.  Every day is a chance ‘We Get To’ do something special in this life In a  positive way.”

DiStefano is an inductee of the Sachem Athletic Hall of Fame and the College of Mount Saint Vincent Hall of Fame. He was a stand-out volleyball and basketball player at Sachem and has been a championship coach with Sachem North’s volleyball program.

The ceremony will be on May 26 at Watermill in Smithtown.

Sachem alum Chris R. Vaccaro is the executive director of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame.

“Matt is a legend, a leader and a positive force who has been selfless in his battle,” said Vaccaro. “He has been a winner at every stage of his life and we are proud to induct him with an illustrious class of honorees this spring.”

DiStefano joins an impressive list of Sachem coaches and athletes who are inductees of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, including Bill Kropp, Rich Cimini, Jumbo Elliott, Fred Fusaro, Neal Heaton, Jeff Ruland, Maria Michta-Coffey, among others.
