Kristen Shanahan’s lacrosse career at Notre Dame was defined by resilience and perseverance.
Despite suffering major injuries — two ACL tears, a broken hip, and a torn labrum — over her first four years, Shanahan returned as the team’s lone graduate student for a fifth season. Her goal was to end her career on her terms, not defined by injury.
She became a captain, leading a young Notre Dame squad through a challenging season in a newly realigned ACC. Shanahan had a strong season individually, finishing second on the team in points (27 goals, 14 assists). She capped her career with a five-point game and a last-second goal in a 17-6 win over Louisville — a fitting, poetic end in front of her family and friends at home in Arlotta Stadium.
Throughout her journey, Shanahan leaned heavily on her teammates and coaches for support, turning obstacles into motivation. Ultimately, she left a legacy of leadership, love for the game, and dedication to Notre Dame, fulfilling her dream of leaving the sport on her terms.
