Sachem Athletic Hall of Famer Rick Mercurio continues to leave a lasting impact on the game of lacrosse at both the local and global levels.
Mercurio, who recorded 316 career wins during his coaching tenure at Sachem, was elected to the World Lacrosse Board of Directors for the first time during the organization’s 2025 General Assembly, filling one of two open Strategic Director positions.
Since retiring from Sachem, Mercurio’s involvement in lacrosse has expanded significantly, transitioning from coaching into international leadership and development. He currently serves as chair of the World Lacrosse Development Committee and has been deeply involved in advancing the sport worldwide.
World Lacrosse President Bob DeMarco said the General Assembly represented a critical moment for the sport as it prepares for continued growth leading into the Olympic Games. He congratulated Mercurio on his election and expressed confidence that his experience and leadership will continue to impact the global lacrosse community positively.
Mercurio brings more than four decades of experience to the board as a player, coach, administrator, and clinician. Over more than 14 years of service with World Lacrosse, he has helped guide the organization’s expansion from 35 to 95 member nations, playing a key role in the development of lacrosse worldwide.
