One of those unforgettable Sachem moments. In a day that will forever be etched into the district’s athletic history, four Sachem wrestlers captured Suffolk County championships — and Sachem North secured its first team county title since 1992, punctuating a program-defining performance that blended legacy, emotion, and dominance on the mat.
Legacy Sealed: The Vecchios Make History
Tommy Vecchio’s Suffolk County Championship at 175 pounds was every bit as emotional as you can imagine. With his victory, the senior embraced his father, Tony Vecchio — a Sachem assistant coach and 1995 county champion himself — in a moment that instantly became part of Sachem lore. The Vecchios are now the first father-son duo in Sachem history to win Suffolk County wrestling titles. Tommy’s win preserved his flawless senior season at 44-0. In a scene that perfectly captured what Sachem wrestling represents, Tony placed the championship medal around his son’s neck atop the podium. Legacy. Family. History. A beautiful Sachem moment all around.
Pierre Powers North to Team Glory
From a roaring student section with “V-A-L-D-E-Y” painted proudly across their stomachs to a thunderous celebration at the final whistle, Valdey Pierre delivered one of the most memorable performances in Sachem North history. Competing at 285 pounds, Pierre dominated his bracket to win the Suffolk County championship — and in doing so, clinched the team title for Sachem North, its first since 1992. The emotion that followed was unforgettable. Pierre sprinted toward head coach Anthony Marino and leaped into his arms as the magnitude of the moment set in. Coaches, teammates, and fans erupted. Memorable. Historic. Program-defining.
Schroff Shines for Sachem East
On the other side of town, Sachem East’s Jon Schroff put together a masterclass at 165 pounds, dominantly capturing the Suffolk County championship. Afterward, Schroff delivered one of the most detailed and thoughtful post-match interviews you’ll ever hear on WSHR — a reflection of both his preparation and poise. His performance reinforced the depth and strength of wrestling across the Sachem community.
Cardona Crowned Champion and Most Outstanding
Adding to the historic haul, Sachem North’s Alicia Cardona claimed the 107-pound Suffolk County championship and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Her performance stood out among an elite field, showcasing skill, composure, and championship grit.
