The journey came full circle for Sachem East Class of 2020 graduate Kristen Shanahan as she returned to her alma mater Thursday evening to deliver the commencement address to the Class of 2026.
Standing before a packed crowd on the same field where she once celebrated her own graduation, Shanahan shared a heartfelt message centered around one simple, yet powerful word: belief.
Drawing from her own experiences as a collegiate student-athlete, Shanahan reminded graduates that success is rarely a straight path. Instead, it is often defined by resilience, perseverance and the willingness to continue believing in yourself even when circumstances become difficult.
Following an outstanding high school career at Sachem East, Shanahan continued her lacrosse journey at the University of Notre Dame. While her talent earned her the opportunity to compete at one of the nation’s premier programs, her collegiate career was met with significant adversity as she battled multiple injuries that threatened to derail her goals.
Rather than allowing those setbacks to define her, Shanahan leaned on the belief that had carried her throughout her life. She eventually transferred to the University of Maryland, where her perseverance paid off in remarkable fashion. During her final collegiate season, she enjoyed the most productive offensive campaign of her career, setting personal bests while helping one of the nation’s elite programs compete at the highest level.
Throughout her address, Shanahan encouraged graduates to understand that setbacks are not failures, but opportunities to grow stronger.
She spoke candidly about the uncertainty that accompanies injuries, difficult decisions and unexpected changes in life, emphasizing that belief is not simply confidence when things are going well. True belief, she explained, is choosing to trust yourself during the moments when success feels farthest away.
Her message resonated with the graduating seniors as they prepare to begin the next chapter of their lives, whether in college, the workforce, military service or other pursuits.
For the Class of 2026, Shanahan’s story served as a reminder that the road ahead will not always be easy, but perseverance, resilience and belief in oneself can lead to opportunities greater than originally imagined.
As the ceremony concluded, Shanahan’s return to Sachem East represented more than a homecoming. It illustrated the lasting connection between Sachem alumni and the next generation of students, showing graduates that with determination, resilience and belief, their own stories are just beginning.
