North baseball beats defending champs

Sachem North baseball picked up its first win of the season Wednesday over League II rival and defending Suffolk County Class AA champion Connetquot. The Arrows won, 5-4.

Kevin Kowalski pitched a complete game and allowed six hits and recorded five strikeouts for Sachem (1-3). Luke Leonardi swung the bat well, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Sachem East baseball: Sachem 11, Bay Shore 3 … Sachem East picked up an 11-3 win over Bay Shore and improved to 3-1. Nick Liegi, who earned the win on the mound while striking out five batters across six innings, was helped by Dan Hetzel and Christian Steigerwald, who were both 2-for-3 with two RBIs, respectively.

Sachem North boys lacrosse: West Islip 9, Sachem 3 … Evan Petillo, Sean O’Brien and Joe Caridi scored goals for Sachem in a 9-3 loss against West Islip, the sixth ranked team in the country. Sachem is now 2-1.

Sachem East boys lacrosse: Smithtown West 18, Sachem 9 … The Arrows scored nine goals, but Smithtown West scored 18. Sachem East is now 0-4 to start the 2013 boys lacrosse season after Wednesday’s defeat against one of the strongest teams in the nation.

Sachem boys golf: East 7.5, North 1.5 … East beat North in a rivalry match on the greens. Nick Carauna shot an 11-over-par (46) for Sachem East at Pine Ridge in Coram.

Sachem North softball: Sachem 7, Northport 6 … On Tuesday, Sachem improved to 2-0 on this young season with a 7-6 victory over Northport. Nicole O’Donnell hit a three-run double in the sixth inning and Jakie Rio scored the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice. Rebecca Amadeo earned the victory on the mound for the Flaming Arrows.

Sachem East boys tennis: Sachem 5, Miller Place 2 … The Arrows earned their first victory of the season on Tuesday after beating Miller Place, 5-2, in League V action. Chris Wang beat Dan Klein 6-3, 6-1 at first singles and Nick Auffret beat Rob Gudley 6-2, 6-1 at second singles.
