Updates: Answers to your questions after Sandy

The Sachem Central School District will officially be closed on Monday, Nov. 5, according to District Superintendent James Nolan. This includes all extra curricular activities.

As Mr. Nolan eluded to late last week, there are many community residents and staff members without electric, and many roads that are inaccessible within the school district.

Tuesday, Nov. 6 – Election Day – is scheduled as a staff development day in Sachem, but students do not attend classes. Teachers should report to their buildings at 8:30 a.m. Any teachers with difficulty regarding transportation should contact their building principal. Aides do not report on Tuesday.

There has been no structural damage at any of the buildings in the district, only some minor issues with downed trees, which are being taken care of.

The senior banquets for both Sachem High School East and Sachem High School North have been postponed until further notice. There is no set make up date at this time, but they will be rescheduled.

Sachem High School East is still functioning as a shelter for the American Red Cross. There are more than 150 people utilizing the shelter. Once school is back in session, the shelter will be moved from Sachem East, allowing for normal function at the school building.

Regarding the now six days cancelled from school, Mr. Nolan said the district is waiting on ruling from the state education department on whether or not vacation days will be affected from the time off due to Hurricane Sandy.

The drama productions at both high schools were cancelled last week and club advisors are working on new dates for the highly anticipated showing of “Little Women” at Sachem East and “Lend Me A Tenor” at Sachem North.

The district is aware that its website, Sachem.edu, has been down during the last week due to servor problems, which are a result of power outages. The IT department is working to correct any problems regarding the website.

None of the poling places which are open on Election Day within Sachem school buildings have been affected by the storm and will be fully operational on Tuesday, Nov. 6 for elections.

Mr. Nolan is hopeful that the school schedule will be back to normal on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The school district, which experienced five days off last week, will continue to keep the community informed as soon as any new information becomes available.
