Sachem East field hockey will play in its second county championship in as many years thanks to a 2-0 shutout victory over Ward Melville on Sunday afternoon.

Top-seeded Sachem (18-0) was led by Katie Shanahan, who scored both goals for the Arrows over No. 5 Ward Melville in the Suffolk County Class A semifinals.

Of Sachem’s 18 victories, 12 have been shutouts this year. Sachem has also recorded five shutouts in its last eight playoff games spanning the last two seasons.

Sachem will play No. 3 Bay Shore in the county championship on Monday at Sachem High School North, a neutral site, at 11 a.m.

Did you know? Katie Shanahan wears the family No. 26 on her jersey. From her father Dave, a Sachem alum and current head football coach at John Glenn High School, to her Uncle Doug, whose No. 26 is retired at both Sachem and Hofstra in men’s lacrosse, the number has had significant meaning in the Shanahan family.
