Ruland talks about Bynum and injuries

Sachem alum Jeff Ruland and basketball are synonymous. Whether playing, coaching or just speaking his mind, he’s always involved with the game.

Currently the head men’s basketball coach at the University of the District of Columbia, Ruland is a former NBA all-star and graduated from Sachem in 1977. His team was in Philadelphia to play Villanova recently and the Philly Inquirer grabbed his thoughts on playing injured, relating it to Andrew Bynum, a current Sixers player who was acquired in a four-team blockbuster deal over the summer.

Ruland knows a thing or two about injuries, originally hurting his knee playing in college at Iona and suffering for years from a number of other injuries.

“People have to understand – nobody wants to be injured,” he told the Inquirer. “I was 28, an all-star – not just a 12th man on a roster- and to have that taken away was really frustrating.”
