In arguably the deepest tournament talent wise in Suffolk County prior to the actual county finals held next month, the Sachem North Invitational this weekend featured some of the top squads in the area.
It goes without saying that Sachem North and Sachem East pack a heavy punch, especially in a tournament in their own district. Add Connetquot and Islip to the mix and things get interesting.
Sachem East and Connetquot each had four champions. For East, Conor O’Hara started a string of four straight competitive matches from 132 to 152 pounds. At 132 he beat Connetquot’s Gino Titone, 7-4, followed by an 8-3 victory for Jakob Restrepo over Connetquot’s Greg Chery at 138.
Jackson Mordente lost a narrow bout to Brendan Dent, 2-1, at 145 before Michael Piston beat Andrew Werther from Islip, 4-1, at 152.
Sachem North crowned three champions including Matt Stallone, who beat Connetquot’s Sean Miller, 11-0, at 99, Gio Santiago, who pinned Sachem East’s AJ Solomito in 3:15, at 182, and Steve Mills who recorded a win over Ryan Hughes from Islip at 220.
Next up: Sachem East will host Longwood Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., while Sachem North travels to Lindenhurst the same day at 6 p.m.
