Sachem HS East hosts Souper Bowl food drive

photo 1Sachem East combined the school’s love of football and the need to help local families this week with its “Souper Bowl” fundraiser.

The fundraiser was sponsored by Sachem East’s Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter along with State Farm, Youth Serve America and the National Youth Leadership Council.

“The purpose of the ‘Souper Bowl’ is to encourage students and staff to participate in the fight against hunger,” said Sachem East Principal Lou Antonetti.

There were garbage cans decorated with Ravens and 49ers logos, creating a competitive atmosphere for the food drop bins.

“You could support your team by donating canned goods and placing them in the correlated can,” Antonetti said.

If you’re wondering, the Ravens edged the 49ers in the collection race.

Collected items will be donated to local food pantries in the Sachem community to help those families that are struggling. In 2011, 5.1 percent of all U.S. households (6.1 million) accessed emergency food from a food pantry one or more times, according to FeedingAmerican.com.
