This weekend was an exciting time for Sachem track & field. In the space of one hour, one current and two alumni ran at the 106th Millrose Games in New York City.

The Millrose Games opened up with the Club Distance Medley Relay. Jeanna Composti (Class of ’99) ran the 400-meter second leg for her current team NYAC (NY Athletic Club).  She ran a 61.5 second split (this would have been the fastest 400 for Sachem’s current indoor team this season!) for her relay.

After setting numerous records for Sachem in open and relay events and winning a national championship in the mile (’98), she attended the University of Virginia and Cornell Law School.  She is currently an associate lawyer for Willkie, Farr and Gallagher law firm in New York City.

Sachem junior Melissa Michels is enjoying a breakout season. She equaled the Sachem North 55 m. dash record of 7.34 held by Crystal Jones (’85) and Denise Raab (’99) at Millrose Games Trials in January.Michels broke the record at the League I Championships with a 7.31 semi-finals time. She is the Large School County champion in the 55 m. dash and earned a trip to the NYS Championship meet with her third place finish at State Quals last week.Michels has also set career-bests in the long jump (16′ 8.75″) and 300 (42.65) during the indoor seasons. Her list of accomplishments on and off the track are impressive. Her 55 m. dash at this year’s Millrose Games saw her break her own record once more with a 7.27 time in her fourth place finish. She is ranked No. 1 in the 55 m. dash in Suffolk County.

As Michels was checking in for the 55 m. Dash, 2004 alum Maria Michta took the track for the One-Mile Race Walk National Championship race.  Michta’s Sachem, C.W. Post, Walk USA and 2012 Olympics experiences have been known to many in her storied athletic career. She set a meet record with her race win in her time of 6:40.06. She continues to work towards her Ph.D in biomedical science at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in NYC.

Millrose Games are the center of the track & field universe each year.  This is not the first time Sachem has had multiple athletes at Millrose. Rachel Paul (Sachem East ’12) joined Composti and Michta at the 2012 edition of Millrose Games.

“I am very proud of the achievements of our three Sachem representatives in last night’s Games,” said Sachem coach Alex Young. “I look forward to more exciting Millrose races with Sachem athletes like Melissa, Maria and Jeanna for many more years.”
In addition, two East girls placed in the High School Girls 20 Pound Weight Throw held earlier in the day at Saint Anthony’s High School. Like Melissa Michels, Gabby Trejo and Brittany Sepe earned their spots at the Millrose Trials held in mid January and did Sachem proud in the Millrose competition.
Trejo was the top Long Island finisher, placing 3rd with a toss of 40′ 2″. Sepe was 5th in 37′ 3″. Yes indeed, another great day in Sachem Track and Field as over at the Big East Championship meet Paul of East, a freshman at Georgetown led off the Distance Medley relay that placed third. She will be running the mile today and should finish in the top five.
