Two students from Merrimac Elementary School organized a relief fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Sandy this week.

Madison Hicks and Olivia Paquette, students from Eileen Guider’s class at Merrimac, asked students to guess how much candy was in a jar they carried around the cafeteria for $1. They raised $427 total. For the record, there were 432 pieces of candy in the jar.

“They were watching the news and learned about family and friends on Long Island that are still suffering from the storm,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco. “Thinking synergy and win-win, they came up with the idea. It’s a great story about making a difference and living the seven habits as leaders.”

Students and staff who donated wrote their names on hearts to show teamwork. They made announcements, flyers and a school messenger call.
