Karisa Goris Moroff represented Sachem North at the 23rd annual Angelo del Toro Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute in Albany last week.

Goris Moroff, 17, was one of 10 students awarded this honor with a top scholarship at the event. The high school senior debated bills at a mock assembly at the state capitol building representing Assemblyman Fitzpatrick.

Hundreds of Hispanic/Latino students from high schools across New York State travel to Albany for a firsthand look at New York State’s legislative process. The Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican Hispanic/Youth Leadership Institute (PR/HYLI) has been in existence since 1990 and was dedicated to the memory of the Honorable Angelo Del Toro in 1995.

The purpose of PR/HYLI is to:

  • Develop leadership skills
  • Gain an understanding of the NYS legislative process by participation in research and the development of legislative proposals
  • Gain an understanding of responsible citizenship
  • Create opportunities for interaction with positive role models such as elected officials and other adult professionals
  • Promote a dialogue between youth and community leaders concerning issues that affect Hispanic/Latino youth
