Sachem North alum Joe Kirchner has been named one of the Captains of the football team at Cortland State, according to a release from the school.

The Red Dragons opened training camp on August 15 with a handful of former Sachem players on the roster. Kirchner, entering his senior season at Cortland, played in all 11 games last season, recording nine tackles, one sack and adding six quarterback hurries and one pass breakup.

He also played in all 11 games as a sophomore and finished with 28 total tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and three quarterback hurries.

The Red Dragons, who return nine starters and 33 letterwinners, finished 9-2 overall last fall and won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) title with a 7-0 record. Cortland advanced to the second round of the NCAA Div. III tournament and tied for ninth place nationally.

Cortland’s NJAC opener is Saturday, Sept. 21 at home vs. William Paterson University at 12 p.m.
