It was a record-setting week for Sachem East last week in the pool.

Sachem East eighth grader Jessica Freund broke the school record in the 200 Individual medley with a time of 2:17.48. This record was previously held by Danielle Lifavi and was set back in 2008.

“Jessica is a very talented swimmer and has a very bright future only being in eighth grade,” said Sachem East coach Kathleen Dugan. “We expect great things from her this season and hope to see her true potential grow on this team.”

Freund was also a part of the record-breaking 200 medley relay. The relay consisted of freshman Alice Tsai, sophomore Kianna Papele, Freund and sophomore Ariel Tsai. They broke the school record that was set in 2008 (2:00.05) with a time of 1:59.02

“It really speaks to the future of this team how young all four relay teammates are,” Dugan said. “

Another record set was Kianna Papele in the 100-yard freestyle. She broke a record set in 2005 by Kate Ansman (:56.30) with a time of :55.28.

“Kianna Papele has been one of our strongest swimmers the past two years and came ready to lead this team in her sophomore year,” said Dugan.

Dugan also said she’s very fortunate to have three true leaders and captains on this team in seniors Marisa Pandolfo, Morisa Young and Jillian Murphy.

Sachem East is 2-1 with its next home meet on Wednesday against Smithtown at 4 p.m.
