In celebration of arts education on Long Island, exceptional scholar artists are recognized to be “the best of the best” in both academics (weighted grade point average of 90 or above) and in the arts (within their chosen discipline) by the Long Island Arts Alliance.

This prestigious honor allows public, private, or parochial high schools in Nassau and Suffolk Counties to nominate up to five Juniors, one in each of the following disciplines: Music, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Theater, or Dance. Ten students from each county receive the highest honor of LIAA Scholar-Artist, and ten from each county are selected to receive an Award of Merit.

Loretta Corisiero, Art Chairperson at Sachem, announced recently that Divya Roopchand, Fine Arts Student at Sachem High School East, received the award of Scholar-Artist. Mark DiMattei, Media Arts student at Sachem High School East received the Award of Merit.

Divya and Mark attended a ceremony on September 18, 2013 introducing the class of 2014 award recipients.

A Gala event will be scheduled at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in the Spring where the Scholar-Artist, Divya, will receive a framed copy of the Newsday article featuring her photo and profile and a $250 award. She is also eligible for up to full tuition scholarships from partner universities.
