Sachem XC toughs it out vs. Ward Melville

Cross CountrySachem concluded its League 2 dual meet season with a 25-30 in over a strong and determined Ward Melville team on Senior Day at Sachem North.

Elise Ramirez led the way for Sachem as she has all season. Sachem’s lead pack of Mackenzie Coleman, Katie Michta, Gabriella Mott and Dowon Hwang chased down an aggressive lead pack from Ward Melville to take four of the five places from 4-8 to clinch the victory.   The action was so fierce and fast that the first 17 runners cracked Sachem’s Top Times list based on 23:00 or faster times on the North Arrows 5K course.

Sachem was ready for Ward Melville’s fast and aggressive race start.  Elise and eventual winner Alesia Muklepust of Ward Melville moved ahead of the field with the Patriots Mollie Dearie in pursuit.  Mackenzie and Katie Michta took over the 4th and 5th spots just after the mile mark and Gabriella Mott moved up steadily after a deliberately controlled start and tucked in behind her two teammates with less than one mile to go.

Dowon fought a tough battle against Ward Melville’s Faith Reynolds and was edged out at the finish line by the smallest of margins after both battled down the last 100 meters of the race course.  Oriana Howell and Monica Abrams – both running their fastest-ever times on Sachem’s course rounded out Sachem’s Top 7 scoring today.

Sachem finishes second in League 2 with its 4-1 record.  Northport (5-0) won the League 2 title for the seventh straight year.  The North Arrows concludes its regular season at the Brown University Northeast XC Championship Meet in Warwick, Rhode Island on Saturday.  Sachem begins its post-season at Division I Championship at Sunken Meadow next Tuesday.
