Sachem and Connetquot will play yet again in a meaningful game. It seems every time the schools from the Ronkonkoma area square off there are important connotations attached to the contest. Today, winner advances to the Suffolk County Division I championship.
Sachem proved to be the only team to beat Connetquot this season as the Thunderbirds have cruised to an 8-1 record and grabbed the No. 2 seed in the Division I playoffs, just ahead of the third-seeded Flaming Arrows, who are 7-2.
Since Week 7 of the regular season, we’ve seen Sachem evolve, make adjustments and rebound from a two-game losing stretch in the middle of the year. Things have gotten more simple on the defensive side of the ball, which has allowed the athletes to play faster and make a handful of big plays over the last month.
Against Connetquot they’ll need the same pace, the same fire, the same vigor that stopped Northport’s passing game in the first round, stifled Pat-Med in Week 7 and made Lindenhurst ineffective in Week 8.
Offensively there are no secrets. Connetquot passes. Sachem runs.
