The New York State Sportswriters Association announced its final state Class AA rankings for 2013 and Sachem North is ranked No. 8.

This is the fifth straight season the Flaming Arrows are ranked within the top 35 teams in the state. This is also the 14th time Sachem has been ranked in the top 25 and just the fourth time ranked within the top 10.

Sachem’s best state ranking came in 1979 when it was No. 6. It was also ranked No. 7 in 1983 and No. 8 in 1986. It’s not a coincidence that the Flaming Arrows also won championships those seasons ranked in the top 10.

If you take out private schools and catholic schools, Sachem is the third ranked public school in New York State. Farmingdale is ranked No. 9 just behind Sachem.

Aside from St. Anthony’s being ranked No. 3 and Chaminade at No. 13, the next closest school from Long Island is Riverhead at No. 14 and Massapequa at No. 16.

The NYSSWA has kept football rankings since 1969.
