Sporting a very deep squad of over 100 athletes this year, the Sachem East Girls Indoor Track and Field team split it’s squad this past weekend by sending 30 girls to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City, and another 33 athletes to Providence, Rhode Island for the Rhode Island Classic.
First up was the Marine Corps Holiday Classic at the Armory on Friday. Strong performances by veteran leaders Maria DePinto, Mikayla Maertz, Courtney Evola, and Brenna McGuire set the tone as each of them ran the fastest split on at least one of their relay squads. Also running particularly strong legs on their relays were Sam Shelton, Marisa Filosa, Angela Calabrese, Janessa Factor, and Hailey Hayes in the sprints, and Kaylie Wessberg and Lauren Harris in Distance events.
Harris and Wessburg teamed with Brooke Howell and Kaitlyn Viegl to place 5th in the Sophomore 4 by 800 relay, earning them both shirts and medals for their efforts. Numerous medals were also earned on Saturday at the Rhode Island Classic- although the favorite number for Sachem East seemed to be 7 – which just happens to be one place out of the medals. Ebonie Lewis (5th in the 55) and Stephanie Curtin (2nd in the Pole Vault) had stand out performances as did the Frosh/Soph 4 by 400 Relay squad of Ciara Murphy, Amanda Fitzgerald, Jordan Messineo, and Dana Tyner which grabbed a second place. Ciara Murphy also placed 5th in the 800 Meter Run with Alex DeCicco just one second behind her in 6th.
The team will again be split in two places this upcoming weekend with the Mile Run and the 1500 Meter Racewalk the featured events at the Armory on Saturday, and most of the team competing at Crossover “D” at Suffolk West on Sunday.
