Lynwood competes at Destination Imagination

1

On March 15, a team of Lynwood fifth grade students attended the Destination Imagination Eastern Tournament in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

Prior to the tournament, students were presented with a variety of challenges to solve.

The Lynwood team chose the scientific challenge in which they had to:

  • Explore an Extreme Environment
  • Present a Story about characters who adapt to survive there
  • Design and create Extreme Gear that is demonstrated by using Technical Methods; and
  • Design and create a depiction of the Extreme Environment

Students also had to include two Team Choice Elements that represent their interests and strengths. The Lynwood team included song, dance and musical instruments to their story as their Team Choice Elements.

There was also an Instant Challenge portion of the competition that students need to solve under time constraints. Synergizing as a team is key to solving these Challenges.  The students worked very hard over the past few months to prepare for this competition.

The Lynwood team did extremely well:

  • They came in third place in their Central Challenge
  • They came in second place in the Instant Challenge portion of the competition in their Specific Challenge and came in third place overall in the Instant Challenge at the Elementary Level (34 teams)
  • Their Team Choice Elements (song, dance and incorporation of musical instruments) had the highest score in their specific Central Challenge

The Lynwood Team Extreme consists of …

  • Emma Furey
  • Luke Mangan
  • Meghan Dittmar
  • Ashley Nash
  • Hannah Rothbaum
  • Evan Rubin
  • Shawn Rubin
  • Coach: Mrs. Cathy Dulovic

As a result of their success, this team is advancing to the Affiliate Finals, being held at Binghamton High School on April 5.
