Sachem East’s Drew Alfano and Sachem North’s Leah Blackall finished their seasons on a high note as state champions and All-Long Island selections.
Alfano, who won a state title in the pentathalon, will head to the University of Maryland to compete in the decathalon and long jump.
“I was nervous going into it since I was seeded number one,” he said. “There was a lot of pressure and I had to live up to the hype. I picked a good day to have a good day.”
Blackall said her coaches were confident she would have a strong chance of winning a state crown heading into the event. Sure enough, she did.
“It felt amazing,” said Blackall, only a junior. “I didn’t even jump my best, so hopefully next year I do better and can win again.”
Both athletes stopped by Sachem’s Athletic Office last week for some photos with their championship shirts.
