Sachem East girls basketball was at its best on Wednesday night. A team known for winning in the playoffs upset No. 1 Ward Melville, 50-44, in the Suffolk County Class AA quarterfinals.
No. 8 Sachem East will play No. 4 Copiague on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Stony Brook University in the county final four.
Sachem (12-8) was led by Danielle Cosgrove (17 points and 14 rebounds) and Gabrielle Aspuru (15 points and 11 rebounds).
Both girls combined for 13 of Sachem’s 22 points in the fourth quarter.
This is the first time since the Suffolk AA’s classification creation in 2003-2004 that a No. 1 seeded girls basketball team lost in the second round of the playoffs.
This is also Sachem East’s ninth trip to the semifinals in the last 10 years.
