Kinkaid Signs as Free Agent with Montreal Canadiens

Sachem alum ready for next chapter of professional hockey career

Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy, Carey Price and now Keith Kinkaid.

The Sachem alum signed a one-year free agent contract with the Montreal Canadiens on Monday and will be a backup to Price.

Kinkaid, who graduated from Sachem East, split time last season between New Jersey and Columbus. He played 41 games with the Devils and none with the Blue Jackets who traded for him as an insurance policy for their playoff run.

“I think it’s going to be really exciting to work with (Price) and bounce ideas off each other and see how one another works with each other,” Kinkaid said during call with press. “Learning a lot of skills from him and see how he goes about his day on and off the ice. So I’m very excited to be part of this organization.”

Kinkaid toured Montreal before signing his deal at the start of free agency. While this is his third stop in three years, he was part of the Devils organization since signing an entry level contract in 2011. He made his NHL debut during the 2012-2013 season and has been a backup consistently in the NHL for the last five seasons.

“It’s a one-year contract, so it’s good for both sides right now,” Kinkaid said on the call. “I just want to come in and be the best teammate on and off the ice and work hard, have essentially a bounce-back season and help the Canadiens win games and hopefully return to the playoffs. I’m just excited to be a part, excited for the opportunity and excited to work with such a young, up-and-coming team like that.”
