Swimming Success for Sachem East and Sachem North

Both the Sachem East and Sachem North swim teams had great success this past season. Some swimmers will continue at the upcoming state meet as well.

For Sachem East, after going 5-4 overall and 4-1 in league play, nine girls competed at the Suffolk County championship meet.

Freshman AvaGrace Monti qualified for the state championship meet in Ithaca, New York on November 22-23 in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:08.50. She placed No. 7 out of 31. Monti also had a personal best in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:17.68 placing No. 9 out of 21.

“This is AvaGrace Monti’s first year on the varsity team and is extremely excited to represent the team in Ithaca,” said Sachem East coach Kathleen Dugan.

Senior diver Amanda Freund finished her high school diving career with a No. 13 placement at the county meet.

“Freund is one of our hardest workers and sweetest girls,” said Dugan. “She is a true teammate and selfless person who is always cheering on her teammates and competitors.”

Other individual competitors from Sachem East: sophomore Paige Levine: 200 & 500 yard freestyle- 2:08.40, 5:39.44, senior Alejandra Przybylo: 100 yard Fly (1:07.79), freshmen Faith Maddox: 100 yard Free (:59.47), sophomore Ava Corrigan: 100 yard Back (1:06.01) and junior Valerie Mei: 100 yard breast (1:16.60).

In relays: 200 Medley Relay 2:01.03 – Sarah Chapnick, Monti, Przybylo, Maddox; 200 Freestyle Relay 1:49.31, Monti, Nicole Orellana, Alejandra Przybylo, Paige Levine; 400 Freestyle Relay 4:03.24, Levine, Orellana, VMei, Corrigan

In the pool at Sachem North the team had a 6-2 record and were 4-1 in league play, tied for first place.

The following girls made the state qual meet: Samantha Watson 10th grade, Katherine Howard 10th grade, Alyssa Golden 8th grade, Alexandra Martinez 8th grade, Morgan Rietmann 9th grade and Christen Wolffer 11th grade. Golden, Martinez, Rietmann, Howard and Watson were All-League.

The biggest highlight for the team was defeating Ward Melville in a dual meet during the regular season since Ward Melville went on to win the county title.

Ava Davis and Lydia Hicylimas made their diving debuts and did very well in Leagues. Davis is an eighth grader and Hicylimas is in seventh grade.

“We have a very young team and a very bright future,” said Sachem North coach Al Scott. “I am very proud of this team and look forward to the next several years.”
