Vintage Mercurio Lax Video Shows Coaching Passion, Strategy

It’s amazing what social media can resurface.

A vintage sideline video of Sachem lacrosse coaching legend Rick Mercurio popped up on the LacrosseIsland Facebook page last week and it brought up some great memories from the Sachem faithful.

There was no mistaking Mercurio’s mustache and Long Island accent, delivering plays and insights to his black and gold draped players hanging on every word.

“I was talking to Chris Asaro and Pete Freidman,” Mercurio wrote on Facebook. “I was telling them about a matchup situation and a dump and run to the opposite side of whoever drew a specific defender (don’t remember who it was) on an inbounds situation.”

Mercurio, one of Suffolk County’s all-time winningest lacrosse coaches, assumes they scored on the next play, which is likely considering how dominant Sachem was at the time.

“It’s amazing that these videos surface from such a long time ago, prior to almost no social media coverage,” he said. “Reminds me how much I loved coaching the kids at Sachem. They always gave it their all. For all of you that see this, thank you for allowing me to be part of your life for that very short time.”
