Sachem North Boys Lacrosse Captures First Suffolk Title Since 1995

As if Sachem North softball winning its first Suffolk County championship in 33 years earlier in the day wasn’t enough, the Arrows’ boys lacrosse team added another chapter to a historic Saturday by claiming its first Suffolk County Class A championship since 1995.

Second-seeded Sachem North (16-3) defeated top-seeded Northport, 12-7, on Saturday afternoon at Stony Brook University’s LaValle Stadium.

“The boys executed, and that’s why we walked away with the win,” said Sachem North head coach Anthony Muratore.

Junior John Calabria paced the Arrows’ offense with four goals and two assists.

“It feels so good to come out here, get it done and win this thing,” Calabria said.

Goalkeeper Patrick “Porkchop” Gandley was outstanding in net, making 14 saves as Sachem’s defense held one of Long Island’s most explosive offenses to just seven goals.

“I was willing to do anything to win this game,” Gandley said. “Every single one of us on the team wanted to do that. It’s just amazing. I can’t believe we did this.”

Northport battled back from an early deficit and took a 7-6 lead in the third quarter, but Sachem responded in dominant fashion, scoring the game’s final six goals to pull away for the championship victory.

Sachem North will now advance to the Class A Long Island Championship game next Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against the winner of Nassau County’s championship matchup between Syosset and Massapequa. Adding another intriguing storyline, Syosset is coached by Sachem alumnus John Calabria, the father of the Arrows’ standout junior attacker.
