Sachem High School alumnus Christopher Macchio, Class of 1996, added another remarkable milestone to his distinguished career Sunday when he performed “America the Beautiful” during the closing ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium before Spain faced Argentina in one of the world’s most-watched sporting events. The pregame ceremony was part of FIFA’s global celebration leading into the championship match.
Helping bring the performance to the world stage was another Sachem graduate. Macchio’s longtime manager, Louis Gregory, Class of 1996, played a key role in producing and organizing the patriotic performance, making it a memorable showcase for two members of the Sachem alumni family.
Macchio has become one of America’s most recognizable patriotic performers and is a favorite of President Donald Trump, appearing regularly at presidential events and national celebrations. Just two days before the World Cup Final, Macchio performed during a FIFA gathering at Trump Tower in New York City. Earlier this month, he also appeared during America 250 celebrations in Washington, D.C.
President Trump has frequently praised Macchio’s powerful voice, at times comparing him to legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Over the past two years, Macchio has become a familiar presence at nationally televised events, including performances at the White House and President Trump’s inauguration in January 2025.
Despite performing on some of the world’s biggest stages, Macchio has consistently credited his roots in Sachem for launching his career.
He has often spoken about the educators who recognized and nurtured his natural operatic talent, helping him develop the signature voice that has taken him from Long Island to audiences around the world.
In recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments and continued commitment to his hometown, Macchio was inducted into the Sachem Hall of Honor in 2025. The music room at Samoset Middle School also bears his name, alongside that of his influential music teacher, Robert Gerstenberg, honoring the mentor-student relationship that helped shape one of the nation’s premier classical vocalists.
Macchio’s performance before an international audience at the FIFA World Cup Final represents yet another chapter in an extraordinary career while serving as a reminder that world-class talent can emerge from local classrooms.
In addition to Macchio and Gregory, Sachem was also proudly represented in the World Cup by Joe Scally, a defender on the U.S. Men’s National Team, and Jon Bellion, who co-wrote the World Cup song “Dai Dai,” which went to number one on global charts.
